About

We think people like to stay in a B&B because it’s a friendlier more personal and more unique experience than staying in a hotel – that’s why we like to stay in B&Bs when we’re away anyway. So here are our own five favourite things about The Waves.

We’ve got the best of the seaside plus the best of the coast
Even though it’s a popular place, Scarborough is still a bit of an undiscovered gem – and we quite like it like that, so don’t tell everyone. It’s got the best of the seaside (it was the first seaside resort after all, and the faded grandeur of those days is still here) but it also has the best of the coast – deserted beaches to hunt for dinosaur footprints, coastal paths along the North York Moors National Park, fabulous cliffs and crashing waves. We do think we’ve got it all. See our section on Scarborough for more about the area’s attractions and see Location to find out exactly where we are.

We have made The Waves the kind of place we would like to stay ourselves
Our part of Scarborough, South Cliff, was the area that developed in Victorian times when the town was the most fashionable place in the land – really! The Waves is a large Victorian semi-detached house that would probably have been the holiday home for wealthy merchants from West Yorkshire (so what’s changed….?).

Many beautiful features like the tiled entrance hall remain but we have also added contemporary design which we think complements it: stylish Laura Ashley wallpapers, feature wooden and brass beds, reclaimed timber tables in the dining room, bespoke hand-made furniture, local-made pottery and our fab and groovy retro 1970s lounge where you can have a game of Cluedo while listening to the jukebox or vinyl collection.

Breakfast – the best meal of the day
We love a good breakfast. We like to have a choice too. And we want having breakfast at The Waves to put you in a good mood and set you up for the day – like being in your favourite breakfast café.

We concentrate on using organic, free range and local ingredients. Our fantastic traditional Yorkshire breakfast uses award-winning local free range sausages and bacon and free range eggs from local hens. We have a Full Veggie option and other vegetarian and vegan choices. We have waffles, home-made banana bread, a super superfood smoothie, and more. See our Breakfast menu for an idea of what’s on offer for breakfast.

We should mention our home-baked bread and creamy organic porridge that porridge experts* (* ie, some guests who like porridge) have said is ‘the best porridge ever’. If you’re looking for a mythical bowl of porridge to match the porridge you had on a camping trip in 1967, or whatever your dream porridge experience was, we think we’re going to come as close as it’s possible to get.

We also offer vegan porridge and other vegan choices, and gluten free bread and will always try to make sure that anyone with special dietary requirements still has a good choice for breakfast.

There’s so much to do
Here’s a list, off the top of my head: beach, sea, Italian Gardens, cream tea at the Clock Café, cliff top walks, putting, Stephen Joseph Theatre, North York Moors National Park, the Wolds, steam trains, the miniature railway, Peasholm Park, Art Gallery, Woodend Gallery, Coastival Festival, Scarborough Jazz Festival, Rock ‘n’ Roll weekend, Northern Soul Weekender, great real ale pubs nearby and fantastic Italian restaurants, with Tuscany Too, just a couple of minutes away, ice cream at The Harbour Bar, the Spa Orchestra, the Last Laugh Comedy Club, the Blues Club and the Jazz Club at the Cask five minutes’ walk away, donkeys, sand castles, rock pools, surfing lessons, mountain biking in Dalby Forest, Go Ape in Dalby Forest, quiet lanes for road biking and the National Cycle Network Route 1 passing by 100 metres away…

The satisfaction of people enjoying their holiday
Holidays are so important, and probably our favourite part of running a B&B is the feeling of satisfaction when guests have enjoyed their break and we’ve contributed something to that. We’ve been at The Waves for about seven years and by now about half of our guests have stayed with us before – which makes us feel we’re doing something right.
